As a college graduate (2017/2018 grad), newlywed (2019) and an adult striving to obtain a career and life goals, it has been hectic. With the bubbly feels of accomplishment, a huge significant life-changing move, years piling up on each other every birthday, responsibilities multiplying and aspirations/goals so aggressively needed to be tended to, I have been loaded with a heap of emotions. Recently I asked myself, am I living a well-balanced life?, and after being in deep thought here is what I figured out.

All the events came at me fast and I was feeling excited, pumped and striving to be my best while doing it all and doing it well. What I thought as ‘holding myself accountable’, was me getting everything done routinely.

What I pictured as a well-balanced life was not what I was living. I began to dread doing the things I once was excited about doing. At times, we as human beings often mix our dreams with reality and believe that when we become adults we would automatically just have it all together and figured out. And boom“A happily ever after”, the end, book closed. Wrong. As a matter of fact, book open…it’s on to the next chapter! Surprising as it is, that idea of a balanced life as an adult for most of us still do not exist because we haven’t let ourselves accept it does not exist. Although that version does not exist, it does not mean a well-balanced life is nonexistent.

I remember one month in my new apartment I started to freak out. There were boxes everywhere so I could barely find my stuff, I just did groceries, the house needed to be cleaned, bills needed to be sorted out, clothes needed to be unpacked, and I still was getting back into my work routine, it was A LOT! I felt like I did not know what I was doing. Everyone kept asking me “how’s married life” left, right and center. It was a bit chaotic. Chaotic and my life does not go well together. If you know me, you know that I live for organization + structure, but it was challenging. So much for being ‘balanced’.

Fighting for more balance can make you exhausted.

A Well Balanced Life Does Not Equate To Your Successes

From my experience, I can say I let my expectancy of what I thought a well-balanced life was supposed to look like, dictate what I was doing on day-to-day. Big mistake. Having to manage my daily work + home schedule, clean, cook, as well as maintain a social life, blog life, study life and all the other miscellaneous things I love required balance. If you saw me on the street you would think that I had my life all figured out. I thought that if I could do all these things, it made me a success and I was killing it.

You can’t be overworked and happy. It does not exist because something will not add up correctly.

I crave structure and organization. I decided that recently that in order to accomplish my goals I needed to do things differently. This involved me making time for other things that were truly important to me, while also getting things done in my home.

What is a well-balanced life you ask?

Having a well-balanced life is not about doing it all and doing it well. It’s about doing what is important and right for you, at a timely pace. It means that you do what is best for you, no hold-backs. It means that you can handle various elements in your life and do not feel like you are going to hit rock bottom or your heart will explode.

Some helpful tips to help you stay calm and acquire a well-balanced life:

  • Simplify your lifestyle.
  • Nurture yourself.
  • Keep healthy: emotionally, physically, spiritually.
  • Do what is important to you.
  • GWTF (Go with the flow).
  • Stay Afloat and Grounded (writing lists, jotting down helpful tips can be a huge help).
  • Take it one step at a time.
  • Expect the unexpected sometimes.

As life changes our priorities change as well and that is okay. We may still struggle with the expectancy of things, sometimes by looking at how someone else did something. That is normal, but do not get into the habit of comparison. That is the number one leading cause of “messing up your mind”. I’m learning every day how to do what is important to me regularly. My well-balanced life comes only when I figure out what works best for me and this new life I’m venturing with my husbae. Trying to do it all and be a superwoman is not what I strive to be at all, however, doing what’s best for both of us might make me well-grounded and that is a goal.

A necessity for a well-balanced life

Last but not certainly least, a well-balanced life would be nothing without God. Make sure God is always at the forefront of everything you do. That’s number one on the list! God not only completes us but he wants us to live a life that is pleasing to him, which includes love, health, structure, and order.
